The Gems Unique Process

From your stone
to a ring that
fits perfectly

We don’t pull a setting off a shelf and resize it. Every ring we make begins as a blank screen in CAD software and ends as a single cast piece of solid gold — engineered specifically for your stone, your finger, and your vision.

“We never buy a pre-made setting and adapt it. Every ring originates as a design made for you — and only you.”

Most online jewelry works like a car lot. You choose from what’s already built. The settings come from factories in Asia, designed for average stones and average fingers. If your stone is deeper than standard, or your finger is narrower than the size chart assumes, the ring never quite fits right.

We work the other way. You tell us about your stone — its dimensions, its shape, its peculiarities. We design the setting around it in CAD, get your approval before we touch any metal, then cast it new using the lost-wax method that master jewelers have used for 5,000 years. The result is a ring that fits your stone like it was born there — because it was.

Step by step

How your ring gets made

Six stages from first conversation to finished ring — and you’re involved at every meaningful decision point.

1
Day 1 · Getting started

Tell us about your stone

The foundation of everything we build

The first conversation is about your gemstone — not your budget, not your timeline, not your design ideas. The stone comes first because everything else — the basket depth, the prong height, the band width, the metal weight — flows from the stone’s specific dimensions and characteristics.

You don’t need to have a gemological certificate or know technical terminology. A clear photograph from above, the side, and at an angle, along with any measurements you have, is enough to get started. If you don’t have measurements, a local jeweler can measure your stone in under five minutes — and we’ll tell you exactly what to ask them to record.

  • Stone shape — round, oval, pear, cushion, radiant, emerald-cut, marquise, or freeform
  • Dimensions in millimeters — length × width × depth (depth is critical and often overlooked)
  • Stone type — sapphire, ruby, tourmaline, diamond, collector gem, or heirloom piece
  • Any existing certificate (GIA, AGL, or other) — helpful but not required
  • Clear photos from multiple angles
GIA insight: Stone depth is the measurement most commonly missing from online listings — and the most critical for setting design. A sapphire cut to maximize color saturation is often significantly deeper than a diamond cut for brilliance. This depth determines the basket height, which determines whether the finished ring sits elegantly on the finger or stands awkwardly tall. We always ask for depth first.

Day 1–3 · Design direction

Share your vision

Your ideas, however rough, become the design brief

You don’t need to arrive with a finished design concept. Most of our customers arrive with a feeling — “timeless and simple,” “vintage and ornate,” “modern and architectural” — and we translate that into a concrete design direction. Others come with a photo of a ring they love and want us to adapt for their stone. Both are excellent starting points.

What we need to know: the metal (14k or 18k gold, in yellow, white, or rose), any style references or photographs, your finger size or how to determine it, and whether you have any specific elements you want included or specifically want to avoid. The rest we handle.

  • Metal choice — 14k or 18k gold; yellow, white, or rose
  • Style direction — solitaire, halo, three-stone, bezel, vintage, nature-inspired, architectural
  • Any reference photos of rings you love or dislike
  • Your finger size — we’ll provide a guide if you’re unsure how to measure
  • Any must-haves or must-avoids
Practical note: Yellow gold and rose gold tend to enhance the warmth of colored stones. White gold and platinum maximize contrast for lighter stones and provide a more contemporary look. We’ll share our GIA-trained recommendation for your specific stone’s color when we talk through the options.

You receive a detailed quote

Transparent pricing, no obligation

Within 48 hours of receiving your stone details and design direction, we send you a written quote with an itemized breakdown — the cost of the setting, the metal weight, the finishing work, and shipping. There are no hidden fees and no pressure to proceed.

The quote also includes a proposed timeline, any design questions or observations from our review of your stone, and a clear outline of the next steps if you decide to move forward.

What you’ll see in your quote: Setting design fee, metal cost calculated at current gold weight, finishing and polishing labor, insured shipping to your location, and total timeline from design approval to delivery.

Week 1–2 · Design

CAD design and your approval

Your ring in three dimensions — before a single gram of gold is melted

This is where the ring begins to exist. We build your design in professional CAD software — every prong, every millimeter of band width, every surface angle modeled in three dimensions with your stone’s exact measurements as the foundation. The basket is engineered to hold your specific stone at the correct depth. The band is proportioned to your finger size. Nothing is approximated.

We then produce a photorealistic render showing your ring from multiple angles. This render is sent to you for review before we proceed. If anything looks different from your vision — a prong feels too heavy, the band looks too thin, or the profile sits too high — we revise it. Nothing moves forward without your written approval.

  • Full 3D model built from your stone’s exact dimensions
  • Photorealistic render sent from multiple viewing angles
  • Revisions included during the CAD approval stage
  • Nothing proceeds to production without your written sign-off
Why CAD matters: A CAD-designed setting can be engineered to within fractions of a millimeter. For collector gems with unusual proportions, this precision is essential for proper seat depth, prong placement, wall thickness, and structural support.

Week 2–4 · Production

3D printing, casting, and finishing

Ancient craft, precision technology

Once you approve the design, the CAD file is sent to a high-resolution 3D printer, which produces a resin model of your ring in exact scale. The model is inspected for accuracy before the project proceeds.

The resin model is invested in a plaster-like material and placed in a kiln. The kiln burns out the resin, leaving the exact negative cavity of the ring. Molten precious metal is then introduced into that cavity, capturing the approved design.

The cast ring then moves through hand finishing: filing, sanding, polishing, alignment checks, and stone setting. Every prong and surface is inspected before the ring is prepared for delivery.

  • High-resolution resin model printed from the approved CAD file
  • Physical model inspection before casting
  • Lost-wax casting in solid precious metal
  • Hand finishing and polishing
  • Professional stone setting
  • Final quality inspection before shipping
Lost-wax casting explained: Lost-wax casting has been used for thousands of years to create complex three-dimensional objects. Combined with modern CAD and 3D printing, it allows us to reproduce the approved design with exceptional accuracy.

Questions

Things people ask before starting

For initial design evaluation, photographs and accurate measurements are usually enough. You can keep your stone during the early design and approval stages. We will provide shipping instructions when the physical stone is needed for final fit verification or setting.
Unusual dimensions are one of the primary reasons to use a custom CAD-designed setting. The mounting can be engineered around the stone’s actual length, width, depth, girdle, and profile instead of relying on a standard-size head.
Yes. We can discuss the desired gemstone type, shape, color, measurements, quality range, and budget and then help identify appropriate options.
Yes. The consultation, measurement review, design development, CAD rendering, revisions, and approval process can be handled remotely through email, photographs, and digital renderings.
Custom rings can be quoted in solid 14k or 18k yellow, white, or rose gold. Platinum may also be available depending on the design and production requirements.
Design changes should be requested during the CAD review stage. The model can be revised before casting so you can approve the proportions, profile, prongs, and other visible details before production begins.
